“Protecting Kelowna's Trees” with Beverley Kalmakoff

Are you concerned with the loss of trees in Kelowna (many due to the pressures of development)?  This service will share the activities of the Kelowna Tree Protectors in the past few years to influence the city to do better and to limit the tree losses that we have been experiencing.  Come hear about how they have influenced past bylaws and those still to come. As well as supporting the trees, our presenters will support us in learning how best to address tree losses in our neighbourhoods and also offer feedback on the health of our KU trees.

About our presenters:

Bev Kalmakoff has lived in the same house in Kelowna for the last 49 years and has seen major changes in this city.  Her concern for trees has been from life experience and the concern for the world and the city in which her grandchildren will live when they are adults.  She remembers hearing Dr. David Suzuki talking about that issue when she was a young adult, never realizing she would actually see it happen in her lifetime.  She serves as the Chairperson of the Kelowna Tree Protectors.

Jeanette Merrick has found comfort and connection to forests since her childhood in Alberta. Later as an arborist she first worked with a chainsaw and loud machinery. Now, after two decades, words are her sharpened tools.  Teaching in the horticulture program at Okanagan College she shares creative ways to protect and support the age diversity of the urban forest.  Additionally, she established the T.R.E.E.S. company providing Tree Related Expertise and Education Solutions.
